Overview
If your computer is experiencing issues after a recent Windows update (e.g., boot failure, system crashes, or performance problems), you can uninstall updates through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This method is especially useful when you cannot access the desktop normally.
When to Use This
Use this method if:
- Your PC won’t boot into Windows
- You experience errors after a recent update
- Safe Mode or normal uninstall methods are not accessible
Accessing Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
Method 1: Automatic Entry (Recommended)
- Turn on your PC.
- As soon as Windows starts loading, force shut down the device (hold the power button).
- Repeat this process 2–3 times.
- On the next boot, Windows will enter Automatic Repair.
- Select:
- Advanced options
Method 2: From Login Screen
- On the login screen, click the Power icon.
- Hold Shift and click Restart.
- Select:
- Troubleshoot → Advanced options
Steps to Uninstall Updates
- In Advanced options, click:
- Uninstall Updates
- You will see two options:
- Uninstall latest quality update
- Removes minor updates (security patches, bug fixes)
- Uninstall latest feature update
- Removes major updates (version upgrades like Windows 10 → 11)
- Uninstall latest quality update
- Select the appropriate option based on your issue:
- Start with Quality Update first (less disruptive)
- Use Feature Update only if necessary
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Enter your administrator password if requested.
- Wait for the process to complete.
- The system will restart automatically.
Important Notes
- Uninstalling updates does not delete personal files.
- Some updates may reinstall automatically unless paused.
- Feature update rollback is only available for a limited time (typically 10 days after installation).
Troubleshooting
Option Not Available
- The update may be too old to uninstall
- Try using System Restoreinstead:
- Advanced options → System Restore
Uninstall Fails
- Retry the process
- Boot into Safe Mode and attempt uninstall again
- Consider resetting Windows if issues persist
Best Practices
- Pause updates temporarily after uninstalling:
- Settings → Windows Update → Pause updates
- Ensure backups are available before major changes
- Keep drivers and firmware updated
