How to Enter Windows 11 Recovery or Safe Mode

Modified on Wed, 8 Oct at 12:35 PM

If your terminal or POS system is having trouble starting up, you can access Windows 11 Recovery Mode to troubleshoot or restore your system.

Follow the steps below to enter recovery mode:

Option 1: Use Function Keys (F8 or F12)

  1. Restart your terminal or computer.

  2. As soon as the system begins to boot up (before the Windows logo appears), repeatedly press F8 or Shift + F8.

    • On some devices, the correct key may be F12 or Shift + F12.

  3. This should open the Advanced Boot Options or Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) menu.

Option 2: Force Windows to Enter Recovery Mode

If pressing the function keys doesn’t work, use this alternative method:

  1. Power on your terminal.

  2. As soon as the Windows logo or spinning dots appear, press and hold the power button until the system shuts down.

  3. Repeat this process three times in a row (turn on → interrupt startup → power off).

  4. On the fourth startup, Windows will automatically enter the Recovery Mode screen.

Once You’re in Recovery Mode

  1. Select Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings.

  2. Click Restart.

  3. After the restart, choose Option 4 or press F4 to start Windows in Safe Mode.

Notes

  • The correct key (F8 or F12) may vary depending on your CPU or motherboard version.

  • Use Safe Mode to perform system repairs, driver rollbacks, or Windows recovery operations.
